DEVELOPING PRESENCE

Presence For Business ~ Influential Presence | Presence For Sport ~ Competitive Presence

Often we hear or describe individuals such as Nelson Mandela, the Dalai Lama, Cate Blanchett or former Reserve Bank chairman Alan Greenspan as having "Presence". In short, they fill the space immediately around them with their particular energy. They exude an inner confidence and hold undeniable power within the vicinity. When they're around, many are attracted to them; few can ignore them. Presence can be a powerful tool.

However, those with famous names and occupations do not hold a monopoly on Presence. There are those within our circles of acquaintance who also "fill the space" around them, exuding that inner confidence and peace with themselves. There are certain characteristics, such as physical size, which can help, but there are plenty of physically small people who demonstrate huge Presence - just think Mother Theresa.

That is because it is not about "having" Presence, but, rather, it is about "developing" Presence. Presence can be acquired through the same sort of performance coaching processes as increasing fitness or achieving promotion. Presence is about developing your "picture" of what you're trying to achieve and then aligning all your drivers to do so, just as I talk about in my book, "Fitter, Faster, Stronger, Smarter". It works - and it's really quite straightforward after you re-train certain elements of your brain.

A Confident Presence

A Confident Presence in the context of life in general is that sense of energy and feeling emanating from a person who is happy within their own skin and confident in their belief that, generally, life doesn't throw up anything that they can't manage. How much Presence do you have? I often work on developing Presence in clients ranging from students at school, learning to like and be proud of themselves, through to those starting their careers; single parents returning to the dating game and those for whom social situations are particularly challenging.

What are the benefits of a Confident Presence?

  • Freeing up headspace that used to be engaged in worrying about what others think of us, so you can use more of our brain to deal with the situation at hand
  • Becoming a magnet to others: Exuding real inner confidence is a very attractive characteristic
  • Increasing your energy levels since you're not wasting energy in stressing out
  • Developing a "reward circle" of drawing positive people and energy to you which reinforces your thoughts that you're worth it, capable and confident - which draws in those positives again.
